Meet Me at the Center of San Francisco :: Nick Cave exhibit

Last weekend I spent some time with some old friends in San Francisco. I had heard about an exhibit that was taking place downtown at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts by performance artist Nick Cave. I didn’t know much about the exhibit other than that it was supposed to be whimsical and bright, two words that excite me in relation to anything artistic. The exhibit is called “Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth” and is a collection of 50 “Soundsuits,” wearable sculptures that Cave created from various recycled objects and named for the various sounds that were made by the materials when combined with human movement.

When you first walk in, there are two rooms you can enter: the video projection room or the room with the Soundsuits themselves. I chose the projection room and I am so happy that I did. The room is one of the most visually stimulating artworks that I have seen in a long while. It was amazing to see these sculptures on such a large scale as they danced and moved, I couldn’t help but wonder what these suits would look like in person.

After about ten minutes of being entranced by these videos, I decided I was ready to see what these Soundsuits looked like in real life. When I entered room number two, my jaw dropped at the color, the texture, and the overall grandeur of these sculptures. As I got closer, I noticed the detail on each sculpture and the variety of materials on each one. I was amazed at the amount of precision that was put into each one of these Soundsuits whose sole jobs are to evoke happiness and positivity in the viewer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this exhibit, I could have spent the entire day looking at each Soundsuit and trying to point out every single material was used in these artworks. I highly recommend this exhibit to not just art enthusiasts but to anyone who is looking for a unique way to brighten up his or her day.

Tickets to both this exhibit and “Through Future Eyes: The Endurance of Humanity” are only $5 with a student ID. Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth” will be exhibited through July 5, 2009.

  1. Jordan, I got a similar reaction when I saw the exhibit! His work is more intense than any couturist I've ever seen.

But you forgot the polar bear! They were my absolute favorite!
