The double threat: Cal alum and fashion blogger Annabel Ly.
If you don't already know about the blogger behind Blushing Ambition, now’s your chance! Although she is known for her great personal style, Annabel Ly also showcases a down-to-earth blog that invites readers to see some bits and pieces of her everyday lifestyle.
Let’s get down to the basics.
- Name: Annabel Ly
- Age: 22
- Education (School, Year, Major): UC Berkeley, 2010, Comparative Literature
- Favorite Color: Green
- Guilty pleasure song: “Somebody To Love” by Justin Bieber (not really guilty about it though..)
- One item of clothing you can't live without and/or favorite current piece right now: Rachel Comey Mars boots!
Some of my friends on the internet already had blogs and told me that I should start one so I did but I had already been active on sites like Chictopia and Flickr's Wardrobe Remix.
What are some of the perks of being a blogger? Do you have any special memories/ outcomes from blogging?
I like a lot of the friends that I've made through blogging and some of my fondest memories come from hanging out with these people IRL.
Any negative aspects?
Probably feeling pressured to change in order to keep up with other blogs or even to adhere to what people want from you. It's not worth it to change like that and some people have tried to criticize me for being too boring or predictable at times but it's my personal style and I'm comfortable with it. I don't dress for anyone but myself.
What are your go-to items and pieces at the moment?
Those Rachel Comey boots that I mentioned before, gray wide-neck sweatshirt from H&M, Gap legging jeans, A.P.C. trench, old and soft vintage graphic t-shirts, Saint James striped top, Gap gingham shirt, and my trusty black Fjallraven backpack.
Who are your personal fashion inspirations or muses?
Jane Birkin and Francoise Hardy!
Are there any trends you’re falling in love with from Fashion Week? What are some items on your wish list?
Right now I'm just really into clogs or anything with a wooden platform, especially those chunky Celine wedges. The only things on my wish list are a denim shirt (so I can pretend I'm Ina Garten), Dieppa Restrepo oxfords, and khaki capris from J.Crew.
Annabel's love of food rivals her love of fashion.
I love that you wrote on your "About Me" page that you'd be "content with spending more money on food than clothes!" What are some of your favorite restaurants or cafes in Berkeley/Bay Area?
In the East Bay: Cheeseboard, Bakesale Betty, Corso, La Note, Venus, and Ippuku.
In San Francisco: Tartine, Sons & Daughters, Bar Agricole, The Summit, Walzwerk, Chapeau, Bi-Rite Market & Creamery, Mama's, Humphry Slocombe, Pal's Takeaway, El Metate, Cassis, Schmidt's, Maganolia, and a bunch of other places I'm probably forgetting.
Chicken with egg yolk from Ippuku in Berkeley.
