While the New York Fashion Week debuts are always inspirational to the fashion-enthused public, it is even more wonderful to see the inspiration behind collections. This year’s Spring/Summer 2012 collections were nothing short of amazing. From the 40’s-inspired looks of Anna Sui to the futuristic cuts of Prabal Gurung, viewers from around the world ooh-ed and ah-ed runway after runway. Among the favorites, there were two inspired collections that really stuck out in my mind.
Rodarte – NYFW SS 2012
From Starry Nights to Sunflowers, Rodarte’s SS 2012 collection echoed the famous works of Van Gogh. Floral prints are almost a given for any Spring collection, but Rodarte’s interpretation of Van Gogh’s series of sunflower paintings took it one step further. Inspired by the infamous oil paintings, Rodarte’s ensembles are beautiful enough to hang in any museum on their own.
Ralph Lauren – NYFW SS 2012
The extravagant lifestyles of the affluent in the 1920’s was epitomized in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. I remember being forced to read this book in high school, but I ended up falling in love with Daisy Buchanan’s character – so tragically elegant and beautifully flawed. When I saw Ralph Lauren’s SS 2012 Gatsby-inspired collection, I practically swooned. It was the graceful and modern take on what I imagined Daisy to look like. Not to mention, the classic silhouettes and shades of pastel are perfect for springtime.
